ASGA reports apparel and footwear seesaw

According to the Australian Sporting Goods Association retail survey, April saw footwear sales up 4.5 percent, followed by May with rises of 20.2 percent to $80.3m and even in June with 0.3 percent rise.

Meanwhile apparel sales declined in April by 3.1 percent but rose strongly in May by 17 percent to $68m, and again in June by 14 percent above June 08’s level.

• Golf at wholesale remained positive, up 11percent on same quarter previous year, due to strong sales in golf clubs (+13 percent), bags (+46 percent) and buggies (+88 percent).

For the first half of 2009, total golf was up seven percent on the previous year.
Consumables, such as balls and gloves, are strong indicators of participation with balls +9 percent and gloves +13 percent in the first half of this year.
