ASGA’s Walker on retail council
Published: July 13, 2012The Australian Sporting Goods Association today welcomed the Assistant Treasurer’s announcement of the members of the Retail Council of Australia and its first meeting.
Executive Director of ASGA, Shannon Walker, who has been named as a member of the new council, says “I look forward to working with members to develop policies to improve and support Australia’s retail sector.
“ASGA was one of the leaders of the Fair Imports Alliance, calling for a level playing field for Australian retailers competing with overseas competitors. The success of that campaign has resulted in the Productivity Commission inquiry and now the council,” he says.
“While the council is yet to have its first meeting, I have no doubt the low value threshold will be an important item for discussion. But it will also be a forum for other concerns, including retail tenancies, consumer protection, trading hours and how technology is changing the way Australians shop.
“ASGA members, and other players in the sporting goods and active lifestyle industries, also have specific concerns around issues like trademark protection and the dangers of counterfeit goods coming into Australia.
ASGA represents manufacturers, wholesalers and importers, as well as retailers. We must keep the interests of the entire retail supply chain in mind, while we are discussing these issues,” says Walker.
