Battle of the World Cup jerseys on field

The big three global sportswear giants are fighting their own battles at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janiero.

And Nike is just ahead, providing kit for ten of the 32 countries participating, ahead of adidas with eight and Puma with eight.

Adidas will be represented by four teams in the top five on FIFA rankings (Spain at number one, followed by Germany, Argentina and Colombia at number five).

Nike has fourth-ranked Portugal, and of course, Australia.

Other brands in the tournament include Uhlsport (Iran), Burrda (Belgium), Lotto (Costa Rica), Joma (Honduras).Bosnia and Herzegovina is reported to be sponsored by Italian brand Legea.

• According to a report published by Citi Research, Nike is the market leader for sporting goods in the world overall, and in its rival German brand’s backyard of Europe, reports the ISPO Daily newsletter.

The report shows the results of a recent survey taken by 185 European retailers – 56 percent said that Nike has gained a greater market share, with many reporting the growth was at the expense of adidas.

Nike’s European figures are yet to be published, says the ISPO newsletter as the two brands have different financial years.

For 2013 (December 31), Adidas had sales in Europe of  US$5.3 billion.

In its combined four quarters for last year, Nike reported US$4.4 billion in sales, but the report suggested that Nike is set to outstrip the its rival this financial year ending on April 30.
