Brave Baldock takes on the Channel again

Celebrating Cyril Baldock’s swimming experiences, The Australian newspaper carried this striking picture of our cross-Channel devotee.

Cyril Baldock first took on the English Channel 29 years ago, as “the fifth Australian to swim the cold and gruelling 34 kms stretch of water.”

Brother of Ted Baldock, currently of Sydney-based RCG Brands and overseeing footwear brands like Merrell, Saucony and Sperry TopSider, Cyril is almost 71 and trains at Bondi Beach.

The brothers have been major players in the Australian apparel and footwear industries for many years and launched the Spank swimwear brand several decades ago.

Cyril plans his record swim next month with his son Grant and daughter Corrina in his support crew.

Also swimming with him will be a swimmer coached by Michael Renford, son of old mate and coach Des Renford, who had been hoping to make it 20 crossings out of 20 attempts but who had a heart attack some weeks before Baldock and Renford were due to set off.

Baldock told The Australian newspaper he promised Renford then that he would attempt to be the oldest man to swim the English Channel and next month’s Channel crossing is “the Everest of world swimming.”

Sportslink wishes him luck with his record swim, and his fund-raising for the Melanoma Institute of Australia.
