Cautious response to Panel report

Release of today’s report ‘The Future of Australian Sport’ by Minister for Sport Kate Ellis has been met with cautious optimism by some peak bodies including Cricket Australia and Rowing Australia, but both wanted more time to produce a considered response.

Among many other statements, the Independent Sports Panel reports: “If more money is to be injected into the system then we must give serious consideration to where that money is spent.

“If we are truly interested in a preventative health agenda through sport, then much of it may be better spent on lifetime participants than almost all on a small group of elite athletes who will perform at that level for just a few years.”

Releasing the report, Minister Ellis says, “The comprehensive report of chairman David Crawford and his team is the product of consultation with more than 650 groups and individuals across the spectrum of Australian sport.

“The report examines elite and community level sport as well as sport for young people, women and men, sport for people with a disability and the engagement of Indigenous and ethnic Australians.”

The panel was chaired by businessman David Crawford, who has previously driven change at the Australian Football League and Football Federation Australia. He is also chairman of Foster’s Group Ltd and Lend Lease Corporation and director of BHP Billiton Ltd, as well as holding other senior corporate positions.

Other members of the panel included Mark Bouris ( businessmen and creator of Wizard home loans and Sydney Rooster Rugby League Club board member); Sam Mostyn (extensive background in law and corporate affairs, and AFL commissioner); Pam Tye (Hockey Australia president and former Australian Sports Commission board member) ; and Colin Carter (a senior adviser to the Boston Consulting Group and a director of several companies including Wesfarmers and World Vision).
