Cup battles get going

Australia has already qualified for the AFC Asian Cup, to be held in Australia in January 2015 but other matches will be held over the next few months, report organisers.

Local organising committee Chief Executive Michael Brown says preparations were well underway for what will be the largest football event ever held in Australia.

"Our aim is to make AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 a world-class event that celebrates Asia's rich football culture and leaves an enduring legacy for the game in Australia.”

“The AFC Asian Cup 2015 is expected to reach a television audience of 2.5 billion and bring 45,000 international visitors to Australia,” he says.

Matches in the 16-nation tournament will be played across five stadiums in Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victoria.

The AFC Asian Cup 2015 is being jointly-funded by federal and state governments.
